5. Describe your current role and your career trajectory in risk & compliance?
In this C-Suite role, I am responsible for leading all elements of Mayo Clinic's multi-national enterprise-wide security program, including the enterprise-wide security policy, security strategy, security operations, and security risk management impacting over 77,000 employees and contractors worldwide. I Lead and coordinate security initiatives working with executive, business and functional leaders and staff including human resources, audit and compliance, corporate and financial investigations and legal. I manage security risk to the organization to ensure business alignment, effective governance, operational efficiency and performance monitoring and measurement. I also lead the execution of critical relationship building and maintenance with federal, state and local law enforcement in the United States and abroad including international embassies.
This position is my third corporate/private industry C-Suite role. Prior to that, I was a Federal Law Enforcement Agent and Executive. I retired from the United States Department of Justice as a member of the Senior Executive Service and transitioned into private industry. I have also served as an adjunct professor, paid on-air contributor to national news and written contributor to the Wall Street Journal Crisis of the Week Column.
6. Do you have any habits or disciplines that you have developed that helps keep you motivated?
A.) Make mentoring and coaching a part of your DNA, it pays huge dividends.
B.) Don’t be afraid to lateral for experience. A lateral for experience will take you further than a promotion that you are not prepared for. Any measure of success that I have achieved has not been because of the opportunities I wasn’t afforded…..they are because of the opportunities I was afforded and executed on. There is an unintended consequence of being forced to do more, experience.
C.) Establish Trustful Non -Transactional Relationships – Build your own internal board of directors and ensure that your board is diverse. My mentors, sponsors and advocates come from all races, genders, academic backgrounds and walks of life.
D.) Recruit, Hire And Train Great People –
1. Get out of their way
2. Empower them to do their jobs
3. Don’t micromanage them
4. Reward them
5. Enjoy Success
E.) Make it a priority to create a balanced, fun environment for others -

Being a Mentor brings me the most joy. The ability to listen and share knowledge and experiences with others is very fulfilling. Helping individuals grow in their career, in their personal life or in their spiritual life, regardless of their age, race, etc. is one of the best gifts God has given to me. Not only do I have the ability to share with them, but I learn from them as well. When I see the impact that I have made in the lives of others I take pride in knowing that I have been a positive influence in their journey.

"Never Give Up" - no matter what circumstances or challenges I may face in life, I pray and push forward because I know in the end it will come to pass or there will be something better for me.
